| What
do you get when you cross farm tours, agricultural artists,
education and entertainment? That's the premier of the Placer
Farm and Barn Festival on Sunday, October
14 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
An
outgrowth of the increasingly popular AGROart™ competition,
this two-day event combines fun, food, music, and first-hand
exposure to working farms into outings the whole family can
enjoy. Presented by the Arts Council of Placer County with
Sierra College, the USDA, the University of California Cooperative
Extension, and the Placer County Agricultural Commission,
it is a weekend celebration of all things PlacerGROWN.
On
Saturday, the activity will center around the quad on the
Sierra College campus in Rocklin, where individuals and groups
of children and adults -- divided by age groups – create sculptures
made of fruits and vegetables. Respected jurors will judge
The AGROart™ contestants' works, with prizes awarded at the
end of the day in a variety of categories.
While
the imaginative artists play with their food throughout the
day – turning cauliflower and carrots into carvings, and eggplant
and snap peas in to statures – there will be music on the
stage, farm-fresh produce and locally produced art for sale,
fruit tasting, and a children's produce play garden.
Sunday,
the festival takes to the road for a self-guided auto tour
of several working farms and an historic country schoolhouse
in western Placer County. Visitors will experience up-close
encounters with farm animals, explore vintage and modern barns,
eat farm-fresh food and see educational demonstrations of
agricultural operation in action.
A unique
treat for the whole family, tickets are $5 for adults; free
admission to children 12 and under. For farm tour tickets, tour
maps or more information on participating in the AGROart™ competition,
