Perhaps the most appealing aspect of living, working, or playing in Placer County is the opportunity to enjoy the rich natural resources of our communities and our National Forest. The abundance of lakes and rivers, mountains and meadows, forests and fields makes for a variety of opportunities to explore plant and animal life.

The beautiful landscapes of the Gold Country can be enjoyed by simply looking out the window as you drive down the road, but for those who wish for some structure the Tahoe National Forest offers several Nature Trails and Interpretive Trails with pamphlets to direct you in your observations, and in season, some guided activities such as Springtime Wildflower Walks and Star-Gazing parties. One of the self-guided tours is the Placer County Big Trees Grove – the northernmost grove of Giant Sequoia. In addition to the giants, this grove is home to other conifers, shrubs, forbs, and wildflowers. Some examples are the Sugar Pine, Bear Clover – a member of the Rose family, Greenleaf Manzanita, Western Azaleas, and Dogwoods.

Of course the Big Trees Grove, as well as the rest of Placer County is home to abundant wildlife – birds, fish, bugs, bears, deer, mountain lions, and more. You name it; we’ve probably got it. With both Auburn and Meadow Vista offering official Bird Sanctuaries, the bird watching options are excellent – from resident raptors and songbirds like the California Spotted Owl and the Dark-Eyed Junco to popular game birds like wild turkey and quail, to migratory visitors like the Western Tanager. For the fishing enthusiast, there are several reservoirs and rivers stocked with varieties of bass and trout. Campers beware! Not only will a black bear make a good meal of your ice chest, but raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks have also been known to raid unwatched food bags, albeit more quietly.
